The ones you look for in a hurry

Locksmiths, plumbers and electricians are always searched at the worst possible moment, which is exactly when people choose badly and pay too much. Save the number before you need it. When you call, ask two things that rarely get mentioned unless you ask: the call-out charge and the out-of-hours surcharge.

Paperwork

Spain runs on paperwork, and the local trade that handles it is the gestoría, a mix of administrative agent and adviser. They deal with vehicle transfers, tax filings and residency formalities. Ask whether the price quoted includes the government fees, because that is the most common misunderstanding. For anything requiring public deed, the town has one notary.

Before you hire anyone

Get the quote in writing and itemised. In building and repair work the argument is almost never about the initial price, it is about what appears halfway through.
