Ice cream
Helados Ana Garrigos
The surname Garrigos comes from Alicante, and it explains more about ice cream on this coast than any flavour list. Families from that province took the trade south along the Mediterranean generations ago, and in the towns of the Axarquia the habit never left.
What that means at the counter is horchata next to the ice cream. It is a cold drink made from tiger nuts, sweet and cloudy, nothing to do with the rice horchata of Latin America, and it is the thing to order here if you have not tried it. Ask for it well chilled and drink it before it warms.
The shop is at number 9 of the Paseo de Larios, close to the top of the street. For anyone curious about how a place eats rather than just what it sells, this is the most interesting of the town's ice cream counters.
