Chiringuito La Isla Playa

Of the ten beach restaurants I have on file in this town, La Isla Playa holds the highest public rating: a 4.7. It stands on the Levante promenade at number 48, which is the eastern half of the beach, the half that stays calm in August while the centre fills up.

It is a chiringuito of the ordinary kind, and I mean that as praise. Sardine skewers off the wood fire, fried fish, whatever the season brings. No cocktail list, no music policy, no beds on the sand. What it has instead is a terrace where you hear the water rather than a speaker.

The reason to walk the extra fifteen minutes east is precisely that quiet. If you are staying near the lighthouse or in the centre and want lunch without queueing, this is the direction to walk. Bear in mind that ratings like this one are built by people who came back, which for me is the most reliable signal a beach restaurant can give.
