Torre del Mar in one day

Torre del Mar is about 33 km from Málaga, on the eastern Costa del Sol, and it fits comfortably into a day on foot. No car is needed once you are here.

Morning: the promenade and the lighthouse

Start at the beach and walk east along the promenade to the lighthouse. It is flat the whole way, the sea is on your right and the town on your left, and it takes as long as you want it to. This is the walk the town itself does.

Midday: espetos

Lunch at a chiringuito on the sand. Order the espeto, sardines roasted on a cane over a wood fire in a beached boat, which is the dish of this coast and only happens at midday. Spanish lunch starts around two, so do not arrive at twelve expecting a full dining room.

Afternoon: the chimney and the shops

Walk inland to La Azucarera, the old sugar factory, whose brick chimneys are visible from most of the town and are the reason the town grew where it did. From there, the Avenida de Andalucía and Calle del Mar for whatever shopping you want. Remember that independent shops close between roughly two and five.

Evening

The Paseo de Larios, the walking street that runs down to the sea, is where the town comes out. Terraces on both sides, and dinner from around nine.

Getting here

By car it is a straightforward run east from Málaga along the coast. There are buses from Málaga and from Vélez-Málaga, and the nearest airport is Málaga.
