## The lock on a flat that stands empty for months

Two pieces of advice for anybody whose home here is closed most of the year. Change the cylinder when you buy, because you have no idea how many keys are in circulation from the previous owner, the agency, the cleaner and the builder. It is an inexpensive job and it is the first thing I would do.

And ask about a security cylinder rather than the standard one that came with the door. The common break in on this coast is not a dramatic one, it is a cylinder snapped in seconds on a flat that visibly nobody has entered since September. A better cylinder and a light on a timer are worth more than an alarm nobody is nearby to hear.
