## What the sea does to the clothes you did not think about

Salt and chlorine ruin fabric slowly and invisibly, and the garments that suffer are the ones nobody rinses: a linen jacket worn on a terrace, a silk dress at a beach wedding, a wool coat stored all summer in a flat two hundred metres from the water.

Two habits worth taking on here. Rinse swimwear in fresh water every single time rather than at the end of the week, and before you close a flat for the winter, have wool and linen cleaned before storing rather than after. Salt in the fibres attracts damp, and damp in a closed coastal flat is what eats a wardrobe between October and June.
