# Torre del Mar

Torre del Mar is a coastal town of the municipality of **Vélez-Málaga**, in the Axarquía region of Málaga province, southern Spain. It sits about **33 km east of Málaga city and its airport**, which is close enough for a day trip and far enough to feel like a working Spanish town rather than a resort. The postcode is 29740.

What defines it is a **2.5 km beach of dark sand** with a Blue Flag and a long promenade, and the _espeto_: sardines skewered on a cane and grilled over a wood fire in a beached boat, right on the sand. That is the local ritual, and it is worth planning a lunch around it.

## Three things worth knowing before you come

- **It is a real town, open all year.** Unlike the purpose-built resorts further west, Torre del Mar has schools, a health centre and a market. In January the shops are open.
- **There is no train.** The Axarquía has no rail line. You arrive by car or by bus, and the bus station sits right in the centre.
- **Parking is the hard part in August.** Not getting here, parking. There are free bays by the sea, but they fill early.
