## Getting a Spanish phone number, and when you do not need one

If you are visiting from another European country, your own plan works here under the roaming rules and you need nothing. If you are staying for months, or you are dealing with Spanish administration, a local number becomes genuinely useful, because appointment confirmations, delivery messages and bank verification codes all arrive by text.

A prepaid card is the fast route and needs your passport, since all Spanish lines are registered. A contract needs a **NIE** and usually a Spanish bank account. Shops like this one set both up in the same visit, which is much simpler than doing it online in a language you are still learning.
