## You do not always need a Spanish account, and where that ends

Under European rules a company cannot refuse your direct debit because the account is in another member state. In theory that means a bank account anywhere in the euro area can pay your bills here.

In practice, some Spanish utilities, community administrators and local authorities still handle a foreign account badly, and you discover it when a payment bounces and a surcharge appears. If your property is here and the payments are recurring, a local account removes an entire category of problem. If you are only visiting, do not open one: use a card and keep your money where it is.
